Making arrangements to pump in your workplace can be nerve-wracking, but starting the conversation with your manager early will make the transition smoother for everyone! Use this sample letter to start the conversation before your maternity leave ends. Customise the letter to suit your situation and consider how often and how long you will need to pump for your baby’s age and needs. Work with your employer to make sure everyone’s needs are met.

Know Your Rights
The Human Rights Commission states that employers have a duty to accommodate pumping in the workplace, based on the grounds of family status or sex. We hope all employers can see the tremendous value in supporting breastfeeding, but occasionally parents may experience some challenges with employers. The Alberta Breastfeeding Committee does not have the capacity to engage in Human Rights cases, but this handout provides useful information and next steps if challenges with your employer should arise.
